Nestled in Peoria County, Illinois, the Wildlife Prairie Park, also known as the Hazel & Bill Rutherford Wildlife Prairie Park, stands as a testament to the state's rich biodiversity. Located approximately 10 miles west of downtown Peoria in central Illinois, this expansive park spans over 1,800 acres and is home to more than 150 animals from 60 different species native to Illinois.

The Park's Rich History

The inception of Wildlife Prairie Park can be traced back to the vision of local philanthropist and attorney Bill Rutherford Sr. and his wife Hazel. Originally acquired by the Forest Park Foundation in the late 1960s, the land was intended to serve as a breeding farm for endangered species in collaboration with the Brookfield Zoo and the Chicago Zoological Society. However, as plans evolved, the foundation shifted its focus to creating a zoological park dedicated to preserving the native flora and fauna of Illinois. The park first opened its doors to the public in September 1977 and has since become a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts.
